Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) and C&O Canal
The Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) is 150 miles from Pittsburgh, PA to Cumberland, MD. The GAP starts at Point Park in Pittsburgh and traverses along old steel mills, through several tunnels, across the Eastern Continental Divide, and along the whitewater of the Youghiogheny.
The C&O Canal is 184.5 miles designated as a National Historic Park. The C&O Canal trail follows the historic towpath used for hauling barges and canal boats upriver from Washington, D.C. to the Queen City of Cumberland, MD in the late 1800s. An astonishing amount of wildlife and some of the best sandwiches of your life are along this route.
